  • 3 sports activities in Bela Krajina

If you are enthusiastic about cycling, hiking and climbing, then Bela krajina is the right destination for such challenges. A piece of Slovenia in the southeast calls for sporting activities. Oh yes, Bela krajina is much more than river Kolpa or much more than the famous water sports and other water activities. It is an excellent destination for climbers, hikers, cyclists and other adventurers both in the summer months and on the cooler days of the year. Climbing: For beginners: the wall in Črnomlje, under the castle or under the pub, which is a combination of natural and artificial handrails. For experienced climbers: the largest and at the same time the most interesting climbing wall in Bela Krajina is the wall in Damlje. Cycling: The Župančič cycle path, which will take you about 4 hours (46 km). Vidošiči cycle route, duration 2.5 hours (18.5 km). When cycling in Bela Krajina, before leaving, we recommend that you stop at one of Bela Krajina's TICs, where you can get a cycling map or get one from accommodation providers. Hiking: Jožef's hike or hike along the Lahinja river, which takes 4 hours (14 km). Educational trail Zdenc – Vidovec, duration 1 hour (2.1 km). Even when hiking in the Bela krajina, we recommend that you get a map before leaving, as Destination Bela Krajina has prepared a hiking map where you will find even more interesting suggestions for hiking in the Bela krajina region. In any case, we think that Bela krajina is beautiful in summer when the Kolpa river serves its specialty, but it is no less beautiful in autumn or in winter. In fact, it's absolutely beautiful any time of the year, and if you haven't visited this part of Slovenia before, we highly recommend you do.

  • 10 Must see sights in Bela krajina

The new season is just around the corner and we look forward to your visit. The first association with the Bela krajina is probably the river Kolpa, which cools us on hot summer days, but the land of the white people is much more than that. In today's post, we unveil 10 (lesser-known) sights that locals say you must-see in Bela krajina. 1 The source of the river Krupa Those who visited simply fell in love with the source of the Krupa River. Today the spring is definitely one of the most visited places in the White Krajina and especially popular in the summer months for various photo shoots, picnics or just a walk. The point is located in the village of Krupa, which is four kilometers from Semič in the direction of Gradac. What is special about Krupa is that it comes to the surface in strong karst springs under a 30 m high and 50 m long rock face and below is a 7 m deep spring lake, which fascinates everyone with its emerald green color. We recommend that you go to the source of the Krupa River in the morning when mysterious mists appear over the water and just enjoy the peaceful silence. But the spring is also beautiful the rest of the day, especially in the summer afternoon when the valley of the spring spoils you with its coolness. Cave snails, a tiny cave piper, even a human fish are hiding in Krupa's underground hinterland, but we understand that subterranean creatures are not accessible to us in nature. If you want to learn more about the peculiarities of the spring, we recommend you to visit the Semič Museum House, where you will learn, among other things, that the area next to Krupa is rich in birds and that this area is home to the shelled turtle. We believe that the authentic nature at the source of the Krupa river will let you slow down for a moment and dreamily enjoy the sounds of nature. 2 Landscape Lahinja Lahinja Landscape Park is located in the heart of the Bela Krajina and includes the natural and cultural heritage area of the upper reaches of the Lahinja River. Here you can see water of various forms, which has shaped many natural phenomena and plants, as well as a variety of animal species. The park is beautiful at any time of the year and this is where most of the Instagram-worthy photos are taken. 3 Kozice At about 716 meters above sea level is the Kozice viewpoint, which gives you a view of the entire Poljanska valley and the Bela krajina. Kozice is usually located on the Kočevski rog, i.e. region west of Bela Krajina, but the view of Bela Krajina is so beautiful that we included it in this entry. In clear weather, the visibility from Kozice is more than 10 km. 4 Kostel A picturesque vast valley or a natural amphitheater enclosed between high and steep areas and in some places vertical walls of Jurassic and Cretaceous limestone - Kostel. On Slovenian territory there are 30 smaller settlements in this area with the old parish center of Faro, where the vicar of Ribnica lived in the 14th century. The area we are describing was formerly controlled by the Counts of Burg Kostel. 5 Orehovec spring The Orehovec spring, under which there is also a pond with standing water, namely near the village of Krašnji vrh. The spring flows to the surface from a walled rock well with a stone niche containing a statue of Mary of Lourdes. A little below the spring is Kal, which is fed directly from the Orehovec spring. If you go to the spring or the pond, we recommend that you take something to eat with you, because there is a table nearby that is really good for a picnic in nature. And another peculiarity, the pond is fed by spring water, which is not a common phenomenon in Bela krajina. Today, the mud and the spring have lost their importance (in the sense of water for drinking, washing, watering cattle), but they remain an important part in maintaining biodiversity, since various snails, frogs, tadpoles and many other animals can be found in it. 6 Vinomerski steljniki Probably you not have heard of "steljniki" as both locals and tourists consider it one of the most recognizable natural features of Bela krajina. "Steljniki" are not found anywhere else in Slovenia, they are all the more important for the culture and biodiversity of Bela Krajina. They consist of birch forest, pine, litter, heather and heather. The special thing about the Vinomer Steljniki is that they are listed and protected in Natura 2000 as natural heritage. 7 Sand digger Nerajec We're getting closer to more interesting works that even the locals don't know about. For example, a sand digger in Nerajec has been transformed into a real lake. It is not even visible on the main road from Črnomlje to Vinica, as it is located deep in a hollow formed by years of sand mining, and today a unique biotope for plants and animals is emerging in this place. A fine example of nature's wounds being healed into beautiful natural phenomena and new tourist attractions. We've also highlighted some special features everywhere and will do the same here. In the Nerajec sand pit you can see small islands rising above the surface. There are fish in the lake, gray herons on the lake, water lilies bloom in summer and it's also nice in winter when the lake is covered with ice. 8 Pond Griblje The small pond in Griblje is mostly known to the locals and is located among the fields between the villages of Krasinec and Griblje (very close to our resort). There is a small cottage by the pond and a bridge to access it. It is very likely that you will see a stork at the pond, but otherwise the area is a natural habitat for many insects, beetles and worms. 9 Partisan hospital Hrastnik In the autumn of 1943 the first medical station was built in Rog - barracks and outdoor kitchen. By the end of the war, eight buildings were then erected, and access to them was only possible by an old log and a path that led through the bushes. Today, the hospital and cemetery are protected as monuments. 10 Castle Turn The castle Turn is said to have been built in the 14th century and was first mentioned in 1463. Today the castle and land have been bought from local farmers and the land has been used for grazing. The complex is a ruin with minimal maintenance, but you can also see the Podturnščica spring, which is located below the castle. So in one place we have collected 10 lesser known places or attractions waiting for you to explore. Believe me, Bela krajina is a wonderful country that calls out to get to know it well. Welcome!

We recommend that you park your car in Metlika at the Pungart parking lot. Landscape park Lahinja (Črnomelj) Located in south-eastern Slovenia, Lahinja Landscape Park is in the heart of the Bela Krajina and includes the natural and cultural heritage area of the upper reaches of the Lahinja River. In the park, the dominant natural element is water in various forms, which has shaped many natural phenomena as well as plant and animal species. The tourist spots listed above are also beautiful in summer. If you are our guest again in the summer days, we will be happy to tell you another hiking idea.

  • Mirna Gora - for big and small travelers

If you are hiking Bela Krajina in summer and the weather is cooler and less suitable for lounging at Kolpa, we recommend using the day to explore Semik region, especially Bela Krajina peak - Mirna Gora. Mirna Gora is the highest peak in the hilly area of Bela Krajina and is located in the south-eastern part of the rugged karst plateau Kočevski Rog, which together with the neighboring Dinaric plateaus forms one of the largest forest areas in Europe. At its foot lie the abandoned nomadic villages of Planina, Kleč, Škrilj, Ponikve and Sredgora. The ancestors of the last residents came here during German colonization in the 14th century and stayed here for more than 600 years. Today, lovers of untouched nature and tranquility return to the village under Mirna Gora. If you recognize yourself, then you are invited to the following lines. Under the peak of Mirna Gora there is a mountain hut, which is a partner of the Clean up our mountains project, and next to it is the partially restored church by Frančišek Ksaver. According to legend, with the help of St. Francis, the patron saint against bad weather, they managed to tame the dragon that lived on the mountain. It caused storms and destroyed crops. From the church tower, which today also serves as a lookout tower, we have a wide view of the Bela Krajina and Croatia, to the south to the forested slopes of Poljanska Gora and to the southwest to the peaks of Kočevski Rog, Stojna and Gorski Kotar. The route described follows the educational forest trail Planina - Mirna Gora. Another interesting fact: the bell tower is still active today and you can ring it for good luck. The trail to Mirna Gora is suitable for children from 4 years old. The round trip is easier but longer. The route is well marked at all times. The path described follows a forest educational trail, on which many educational boards remind you of the special features of the forest. Along the way we can get acquainted with a great variety of vegetation, trees, animals and during the way we can also see another natural attraction, for example a lake. We will stop at this point in order not to reveal too much to you. It's best to do your own research. Basic information Difficulty: Easy, marked trail Equipment: Usual hiking equipment Altitude: 1048 m Starting point: In the village of Vrčice, Semič, just before the church, turn right towards Planina and Mirna gora. Soon we will reach the dirt road where we will follow the signs that will lead us to the village of Planina. We park in a well-kept parking lot next to the educational and hiking boards. Time: 45 minutes Season: All seasons Finally, we would like to tell you that excellent homemade dishes and really tasty pancakes await you on the top of Mirna Gora (perhaps as a little motivation). The residents of Belokran will be very happy to see you. Welcome!

  • In our surroundings ... ponds Prilozje

Prilozje is a small village located near the town of Metlike or in the immediate vicinity of our glamping resort. The special feature is certainly the pond, which is classified as one of the central natural attractions in the Municipality of Metlika. Of course, the southernmost river in Slovenia is also worth mentioning - the Kolpa river, which you already know very well, as well as the observation hill Veselica above Metlika, the Bečka cave near Slamna village and the village of Krašnji vrh (top) with its observation tower. Yes, our minds wandered among the natural features of the town of Metlike. Let us now return to the Prilozje. The ponds at Prilozje were created from the former large closed water surface, which is still clearly outlined as a single body of water on the Franciscan cadastre. Today, the central and eastern ponds are used for growing fish, species of tench, carp, bream, ... The western one is left to natural processes and thus represents the habitat of many endangered and rare species that need an aquatic environment for their existence. If you will be staying with us or in the surroundings of our resort (or if you are going on a one-day trip to the Bela Krajina), we recommend that you explore this part of Metlika by bike or by foot. And perhaps another hint, the area by the ponds is very nice for a picnic post. Just take a snack with you :) Next to the pond, you will be able to observe many protected creatures, such as endangered loggerhead turtles, birds, dragonflies and other creatures for which the pond in Prilozje is a habitat. The special feature of the pond in Prilozje is that it is included in the European network of protected areas - Natura 2000 - within the Kolpa area, in order to preserve its living environment. Today, the pond is owned by the Metlika fishing family, and fishing is possible from May to September. Fishing in Prilozje will be a great experience, especially for fans of carp hunting. The fishing rules also apply to the ponds, which you can find here >> As there is also an educational walking trail next to the pond, exploring the water area will be interesting even for your youngest. Bela krajina will surely inspire you with unforgettable experiences that will remain in your memory for a long time.
